Marpessa was a crude oil tanker and was part of Shell's first class of VLCC. In 1969 she sank on her maiden round voyage, 50 miles NW of Dakar. She had a tank explosion during tank cleaning. This incident along with a similar explosion on Mactra led to the introduction of Inert Gas systems.
